This statement outlines our Aims, Objectives and Philosophy of Care. Should any questions arise from this statement, the management team will be happy to discuss any points or concerns. The rights of our Residents are our primary concern and so our philosophy of care reflects this in the services and environment we provide, and in our encouragement of the Residents to exercise their rights to the full.

Aims and Objectives

Rowan House Care Home aims to provide whole person-centred care by addressing its Residents’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs, and by promoting the importance of healthy relationships between themselves and others.

●We will place the rights of our Residents at the forefront of our philosophy of care

●We will provide a happy, secure environment and congenial surroundings for every Resident.

●We will ensure that each person is recognized as an individual, and care and attention is provided to meet each specific physical and emotional need.

●It will be our objective that the Residents who live at Rowan House should do so with dignity, have the respect of those who support them and be entitled to live a full and active life as much as possible, in order to achieve their full potential. This is best achieved by the sensitive recognition and nurturing of that potential in each individual, and understanding that this may change in time. In order to ensure this, each Resident’s care will be planned individually.

●Our care will not to be institutionalized by the requirements of the staff. All basic human rights are accorded to all Residents in our care without discrimination.

●We will provide high quality care to meet the specific needs and wishes of our Residents.

●We will offer and provide high quality care with sensitivity and understanding in a warm, happy and comfortable environment.

●We will encourage Residents to bring their own individuality to share with others, and to pursue their own interests and relationships. Hobbies and leisure activities are encouraged and facilitated. Programmes of activities will be provided to encourage mental awareness, self-esteem and social interaction with the other Residents.

●In terms of risk assessments, those Residents who are judged competent to assess risk themselves are free to make their own decisions as long as they do not threaten the safety of themselves or others.

●Staff will respect personal rights and privacy, and will be responsive to individual needs. In support of our whole person-centred care ethos, emotional and spiritual support is considered vital to the general well-being of each Resident.

●Staff will be sensitive to the Residents’ ever changing needs which may be medical/therapeutic (for physical and mental welfare), psychological, spiritual, emotional or social.

●We will create a home that promotes dignity.

●We will develop independence in all aspects of daily living.

●We will ensure that all care planning is carried out by fully liaising with Residents and their families; to recognise and act on situations regarding capacity in a timely fashion, and to keep principles of the Mental Capacity Act within all care planning.

Description of location

Rowan House Care Home is located in Upper Shirley, a quiet residential suburb of Southampton. We are close to Southampton Common, Shirley shopping centre, and a short bus ride from Southampton City Centre, the train station and Southampton airport.

Rowan House is a beautiful detached Edwardian property which was formerly a guest house for theatrical folk, such as the two Ronnies, who were performing at the Southampton Mayflower Theatre.

In 1990, the house was extended and converted, still retaining the character and ambience of the original building, and providing a comfortable and spacious home for our Residents.
